DeDomenic resigns from council

With over two years left on her term, Laura DeDomenic has resigned from the Bartholomew County Council.

The District 2 councilwoman notified council president Matt Miller late Tuesday morning that she was resigning immediately to accept a full-time job in the office of Bartholomew County Auditor Pia O’Connor, Miller said.

Since the council sets salaries, nobody is allowed to simultaneously work for the county and serve on the council, Miller said.

Beginning Monday, DeDomenic will begin her new job as the county’s payroll administrator, a position recently vacated by Kim Thompson, O’Connor said.

“Laura’s experience on the council, as well as her understanding of both government financial funds and accounting, will be very helpful,” O’Connor said. “But she’ll definitely be missed on the county council.

The next step will be for Bartholomew County GOP chairwoman Barb Hackman to call a caucus of precinct committee members to choose a successor for DeDomenic on the council, Miller said. Only those residing within the district will participate in the caucus, which Hackman says will likely be held within 30 days.

Whoever is chosen as DeDomenic’s successor will finish out her current term, which runs through the end of 2022.

Perhaps best known as a commercial real estate owner and manager, DeDomenic won reelection to a second four-year term as the District 2 council member in 2018. Over the past few years, she was chosen for strong leadership roles with prominent organizations like the ASAP funding and the county’s economic development boards.

“I’ll miss serving on all those committees,” DeDomenic said. “But at least I can remain in county government, which is something I enjoy.”

During this year’s primary, DeDomenic ran for a council-at-large seat. When asked in January to explain why, she said a primary motivation was to move to a home in the Tipton Lakes subdivision, as part of a new relationship, but remain on the council.

However, that didn’t happen. During the June primary, she came in fourth place for the three at-large seats, which wasn’t enough to secure her name on the November ballot.

On Tuesday, DeDomenic said she still resides in her home within District 2. District 2 makes up parts of northwestern Bartholomew County that are north of 25th Street.

“At this time, I still live there,” she said. “But we would like to buy a house together in the next year. I have kids that I’d like to give another year of college before I move again.”
