Local man arrested on multiple charges, investigation continuing on catalytic converter thefts

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man who law enforcement believes is responsible for a number of catalytic converter thefts in several Indiana counties was arrested by investigators from the Columbus Police Department Intelligence Led Policing Unit at a Seymour apartment on Tuesday night.

With the assistance of the Seymour Police Department, detectives arrested Christopher A. Whedon, 50, of Columbus, after he was located inside an apartment in the 2700 block of Bent Tree Lane, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers reportedly located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia while searching Whedon’s clothing prior to taking him to jail, Harris said.

Whedon was arrested earlier this month in the Indianapolis area, accused of stealing catalytic converters off of abandoned vehicles on Interstate 65. He was also arrested by CPD officers in December 2020 for possession of a handgun with a prior felony conviction. Whedon was also probation for felony theft out of Jackson County and a warrant for the probation violation was issued due to his recent arrests, Harris said.

Whedon was transported to the Jackson County Jail after his arrest on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and the Jackson County arrest warrant to revoke probation. He is being held without bond.

Whedon is also suspected of being responsible for a number of catalytic converter thefts in several southeastern Indiana counties and additional charges are possible in this ongoing investigation.
