North competes at Pike; sweeps Talon Relays

Columbus North sent most of its top track and field athletes to the Pike Invitational on Saturday, while a group of other North boys and girls athletes swept the titles at Brown County’s Talon Relays.

The Bull Dog boys finished second and the girls took fifth at Pike. Homestead won the boys meet with 121 points, while North edged Avon 114/5 to 112.5 for second. Fort Wayne Carroll won the girls meet with 124 points to 122 for Avon, 104 for Homestead, 84 for Plainfield and 72 for the Bull Dogs.

The North boys were led by 1-2 finishes in the 800 meters from Jace Works (1 minute, 58.12 seconds) and Akot Tong (1:58.68) and in the 3,200 from Evan Bense (9:55.06) and Jonny Klaus (9:55.13). Works, Tong, Logan Vanzant and Neal White won the 4×800 relay (8:26.99); and Ben Stevens, Derek Arau-Ortiz, Tong and Works captured the 4×400 relay (3:29.99).

Also for the Bull Dog boyss, Arau-Ortiz (52.99) and Stevens (53.05) went 2-3 in the 400. Drew Schiefer finished third in the discus (141 feet, 5 inches) and fourth in the shot put (50-2), Liam Milne took third in the 110 hurdles (15.35) and Vanzant was third in the 1,600 (4:33.35).

Carys Glyn-Jones led the North girls with a win in the 1,600 (2:17.47). Kyleigh Wolf finished second in the 3,200 (11:51.65); and Wolf, Macy Eaton, Ainsley Sherlock and Glyn-Jones took second in the 4×800 relay (10:24.99). Ava Collier finished third in the 400 (1:03.23), Abbi Schiefer took fourth in the shot (33- 1/2) and Lily Miller was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.44).

Meanwhile at Brown County, the Bull Dog boys scored 143 points to 104 for runner-up Brown County and 97 for Greensburg. The North girls scored 173 points to 102 for Mitchell, 70 for Greensburg and 54 for Brown County.

Sierra Newell led the Bull Dog girls with wins in the pole vault (8-5), long jump (15-1 1/2) and 100 (13.70). Kalie McCain took the 100 hurdles (17.29), Kenzie Pendleton captured the 3,200 (12:58.67) and North won the 4×100 (55.41), 4×200 (1:57.81), 4×400 (4:34.91), 4×800 (11:00.58), sprint medley (2:00.99), 4×1600 (24:29.42) and distance medley (14:35.19) relays.

For the Bull Dog boys, Wyatt Clark won the pole vault (11-6), and Adam Reckers took the 3,200. North also won the 4x1oo shuttle hurdles (58.12), 4×100 (47.64), 4×800 (9:09.04), sprint medley (1:51.17), 4×1600 (19:19.02) and distance medley (11:33.24) relays.

Brown County’s Jesse Hubbard won the high jump (5-10), and the Eagles took the 4×400 relay (3:47.42).
