Cummins Inc. has released its annual sustainability progress report in which the company highlights what it characterizes as “significant progress” toward the company’s environmental, social and governance goals and aspirational targets in 2023 and early 2024.

The Columbus-based company says in the report that it reduced Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 31% in 2023 compared to the baseline year of 2018. The reduction was driven by, among other things, the completion of 24 onsite solar projects that Cummins contends will reduce more than 14,486 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually and the implementation of 89 facility energy efficiency projects officials say will save over 5,433 metrics tons of carbon dioxide each year.

“Cummins’ recent acquisitions and organic business growth have had a slightly negative impact on progress toward the goal,” the company states in the report. “When looking at Cummins’ data excluding acquisitions, GHG reductions reflect an absolute 33.5% GHG reduction. Looking forward, Cummins foresees significant opportunities for energy efficiency improvement at the company’s newest locations.”

The report also highlights that 79% of eligible employees participated in the company’s Every Employee Every Community program in 2023, contributing 343,000 hours and serving more than 3.2 million people.

Cummins Water Works also produced additional water benefits of 1 billion gallons, resulting in more than 6.9 billion gallons of water benefits annually in Cummins communities, far surpassing the company’s global water consumption of 972.3 million gallons.

“This report clearly illustrates how our business and environmental strategies are intentionally and intricately aligned – how we are innovating for our customers to power their success, positively impacting our communities and protecting the planet for future generations,” said Cummins Chair and CEO Jennifer Rumsey. “The work we are doing is our mission in action; what we’ve always done and will continue to do.”

In addition, Cummins highlighted its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in a press release and separate human capital management report. In 2023, four out of five of Cummins’ business segments were led by women and nearly 40% of the company’s workforce in the U.S. were people of color.

The human capital management report states that 33.2% of Cummins employees were born in the U.S., followed by 17.3% who were born in India, 10.7% born in Mexico, 8.5% born in China.

In addition, women made up 27.5% of Cummins’ workforce in 2023, down slightly from 28.3% in 2022. About 61.1% of Cummins’ U.S.-based employees were white in 2023, while 13.9% were Black, 11% Asian and 8.7% Latino. A total of 30% of the company’s U.S.-based vice presidents are Black or Latino.

The report also states that 48.5% of the company’s employees are working remote or hybrid as of the end of last year.

About 58% of Cummins’ employees work outside of the U.S., including 13.8% based in India, 8.3% in China and 7.6% in the United Kingdom, according to the report.
