A lightning strike from storms earlier this week is believed to have caused the outage of an elevator at Columbus City Hall, prompting the city to move upcoming meetings.
Three scheduled city meetings next week will be conducted in alternate locations, said Jamie Brinegar, finance director for the city.
The city has moved Monday’s 4 p.m. Columbus Redevelopment Commission meeting originally scheduled at City Hall to the Donner Center, 739 22nd St.
Two meetings on Tuesday — the Columbus Board of Works at 10 a.m. and Columbus City Council at 6 p.m. — also will be conducted at the Donner Center to ensure that all public meetings are still accessible to the public.
Columbus City Hall has two entrances, one of which is in the rear of the building, which has an elevator on the ground floor with stairs leading to the second floor. The second location, in front of the building facing Washington Street, also has an elevator and can take people to the ground level or the third floor, where City Council chambers and several city offices are located.
“We’re hopeful to have the elevator repaired by the end of next week,” Brinegar said. “It will depend on how quickly we can get the part to get it repaired.”
Brinegar said he didn’t have a specific cost estimate on the repair, but noted it could be several thousand dollars.
The public is being encouraged to call City Hall at 812-376-2500 or check the city’s website to check on locations of public meetings that are scheduled through June 23. Individuals with accessibility needs who may need to visit City Hall are also asked to call that number for assistance.
Brinegar said if individuals need to meet with certain city employees, city staff members can meet them on the ground floor. They also can schedule appointments for large groups to meet at alternative locations if necessary, he said.
