GREENSBURG — The South Decatur football team took control of the game early on its way to a 27-0 victory against Trinity Lutheran.
South Decatur running back Devon Martin said the cold weather and rain caused him to change his running style. He usually likes to juke his way through defenses, but had to run more uphill on Friday night.
That didn’t stop him from leading the team with 144 yards and two touchdowns on 20 rushes. Martin also finished with four receptions for 27 yards.
“It was cold weather, but they had to play through it, too, and we had to play through it, also,” Martin said. “… I hope this boosts our confidence, and we keep going on to keep our streak going.”
A Trinity Lutheran fumble on the first drive of the game gave the South Decatur offense a short field. That allowed quarterback Kordell Meadows to score the first touchdown on a 3-yard quarterback sneak.
A blocked punt and recovery on the Trinity 30-yard line helped set up a Martin 1-yard touchdown on South Decatur’s second drive.
Martin made plays on both sides of the ball and put the offense back on the field with an interception at the end of the first quarter.
South Decatur (1-2) scored another touchdown in the second quarter on a Meadows pass to Martin to give the team a 20-0 halftime lead. South Decatur ran down a big chunk of the clock in its first possession of the second half, and Martin pushed the lead to 27 with a 15-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run.
Meadows completed 8-of-17 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
“Tonight, we were able to be a little more versatile,” South Decatur coach Tony Bell said. “The first two weeks we were kind of one sided. Everything was going through (Martin) and to him. This week, we were able to get some other guys involved.”
Bryce Lister came alive for Trinity running the ball late in the fourth quarter. His 45-yard run gave Trinity (0-2) a chance to score before a turnover on downs gave the ball back to South Decatur.
Lister carried six times, and 61 of his 62 yards came in the second half.
“The second half, I think we played a lot better,” Trinity coach Mike Wilson said. “… Bryce Lister is a heck of a player. He plays both ways for us, and running is one of the things he does best.”
