Music, Santa on tap: Two-concert ‘Philharmonic Holidays!’ coming up

Staff Reports

Parents are encouraged to bring the kids if they take in one of two holiday performances by the The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.

There’s no reason for children to be home alone — or with sitters — when songs from the 1990 Christmas movie, “Home Alone,” are featured during matinee and evening performances of “Philharmonic Holidays!”

Shows will be presented at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Clarence E. Robbins Auditorium, inside Columbus East High School at 230 S. Marr Road.

While the matinee performance is designed specifically for young children, the evening show is also family-friendly, said music director David Bowden, who selected the music for both concerts.

Santa will be a lobby guest before and during intermission for each concert.

A separate guest, well known in music circles, tenor vocalist Justin John Moniz will be featured during the concerts — performing music from John Williams’ “Home Alone” score, along with seasonal favorites such as “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “O Holy Night.”

Moniz has sung more than 80 theater and opera roles around the globe, twice winning the American Prize in Vocal Performance. The holder of four music degrees, Moniz serves as coordinator of vocal Studies at Milliken University in Decatur, Ill.

Philharmonic principal musicians will also be featured as soloists with the orchestra in the holiday concerts.

Harpist Wendy Muston will play a piece based on “Sing We Now of Christmas.”

The orchestra’s newly-named concertmaster, Daniel Aizenshtadt, will play an arrangement of “Ave Maria.”

The entire clarinet section will be featured on Leroy Anderson’s “Clarinet Candy.”
