Letter: Letter: Now is not the time, BCSC

I have a number of friends in the educational field, so I am sending this letter with the hope that I don’t offend any of them. I am asking Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. to postpone the school referendum due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Right now, thousands of our local people are facing layoffs.

Most businesses are either shut down or drastically scaling back hours. Just the other day, Cummins announced that most production workers will be laid off. The exempt employees are taking pay cuts. Most retail is closed and restaurants are seeing a fraction of the normal business since inside dining is prohibited.

I realize that any tax increase won’t take effect this year, but this is bad timing. Many people are struggling to pay their rents and mortgages. Even grocery costs will be out of reach for many. Meanwhile, the BCSC staff will continue to be paid.

BCSC, please postpone this referendum.
