Unemployment claims continue to drop in county

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Unemployment in Bartholomew County fell last month to its lowest level since the pandemic pummeled the economy earlier this year, mirroring a trend seen across the state.

In October, the county’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.8%, down from 4.8% in September and 17.2% in April, according to figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Unemployment in Bartholomew County was 2.2% in October 2019.

The decline in local unemployment in October followed a trend seen across Indiana, where unemployment dropped last month to its lowest level since the pandemic took root.

In October, the state’s unemployment rate was 5%, down from 6.3% in September and 16.9% in April, according to state figures released Friday.

The national unemployment rate in October was 6.9%, down from 7.9%.
