Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will have in-person, outdoor graduation ceremonies for its three high schools, which have more than 800 graduating seniors between them.

Superintendent Jim Roberts shared some of the details at Monday’s board meeting, and the school corporation later posted an announcement on both its website and social media.

As a result of the outdoor venues, the ceremonies have been rescheduled to provide rain dates and times, if needed. All three graduations will be livestreamed on BCSC’s YouTube channel.

Per the school corp.’s announcement, the ceremonies are now scheduled as follows:

  • Columbus Signature Academy New Tech: Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m. on Columbus East’s football field. In the case of poor weather, the event would be moved back to May 28 at 7 p.m., which was its originally scheduled date and time.
  • Columbus East: May 29 at 9 a.m. on East’s football field. In the case of poor weather, the event would be moved to 2 p.m. or an evening time, which could be any time between 5-8 p.m. (East’s graduation was originally scheduled for May 29 at 10 a.m.)
  • Columbus North: May 29 at 11 a.m. on North’s football field. In case of poor weather, the event would be moved to 4 p.m. or any evening time, which could be any time between 5-8 p.m. (North’s graduation was originally scheduled for May 29 at 1 p.m.)

Any necessary changes for East or North will be communicated the day of graduation.

“For East and North, the use of an evening time on Saturday, May 29 would likely result in both schools having their ceremonies at the same time,” the announcement said. “Unfortunately, this may be necessary as a last resort in an effort to complete the events on Saturday.”

The school corp. also stated that capacity limits will be in place, and additional information on the exact number of tickets per senior will be forthcoming.

Roberts said told the school board that as BCSC and the Bartholomew County Health Department work together, they’re currently looking at four tickets as a possible number, but they may be able to open it up more in the future. He said that more information will be released as they get closer to the ceremony dates.

In addition, COVID-19 protocols will be followed, including mask-wearing, social distancing, hand-washing and contact tracing.
