Hellen Ochs, author of “The Bird Lady” column on winged wildlife for The Republic for more than 40 years, died.

1996

Since April 1, just over 20 inches of rain was measured at Columbus Waste Water Treatment Plant, keeping farmers from their fields and wreaking havoc on softball schedules as multiple games were rained out on a daily basis.

An amphibious plane landed on Grandview Lake, flown by two dealers who wanted permission for future use of the lake to demonstrate their “Lake Amphibian” plane.
