Michael Brinegar

Michael Brinegar likely has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in one swimming event, and now, he’s in position to make it in another.

The Columbus resident and Indiana University sophomore had the second-fastest qualifying time in the 1,500-meter freestyle in Saturday’s preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. He will swim in the final a little after 8 p.m. Sunday.

NBC will televise Sunday’s finals beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Brinegar swam 15 minutes, 7.93 seconds in the 1,500 prelims, trailing only Bobby Finke’s 15:04.66. Finke and Brinegar finished first and second in the 800 freestyle finals on Thursday.

The top two in each event typically make the Olympic team, although selections won’t be officially announced until after the trials.
