Club Olympia takes second in Central Zone Open Water event

Three Club Olympia swimmers came away with top-five finishes in the Central Zone Open Water Championships June 18 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, leading the team to a runner-up overall finish.

Tony Machavariani, an 8-year-old racing against all 10-year-olds, finished third in the Boys 10-and-under 1.25K, and Connelly Furnish took third in the Girls 11-12 2.5K. Misha Machavariani placed fifth in the Boys 13-14 2.5K.

Former Club Olympia swimmer Nalanie Cortez, who now swims for Fishers Area Swim Tigers (FAST), finished second in the Women’s Open 5K. Rachel Sabotin, another Club Olympia alum who now swims at Akron University and represented Team Lake Erie, placed seventh.

Hope Westphal, who just aged out of the 13-14 age group and was swimming her first 5K, finished 21st. Cole Ehara, also swimming his first 5K, was 52nd in the Men’s Open 5K.

Donner Swim Club’s Ellie Proffitt, who will be a senior at Columbus East, finished 84th in the Women’s Open 5K.

FAST, with 13 swimmers, won the team title with 85 points, while Club Olympia, with five swimmers was second with 46.

Team Illinois won the state contest with 296 points. Team Indiana finished second with 182 points, with 46 of those coming from the three Club Olympia swimmers that finished in the top five.
