John “Big Daddy” Harley Henry, 74, of Scipio, passed away at 1:27 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at home surrounded by loved ones.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father Clem Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. till 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, 2021, with the rosary being conducted at 1:30 p.m. at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral and Cremation Service.

Born on March 7, 1947, in Scottsburg, John was the loving son of Doris Cleo and Ruth Edna (Richey) Henry. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Lou Bindner on July 17, 1971. She survives.

John, known as “Big Daddy” to all who loved him, retired from Cummins Inc. after 37 years. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Diesel Workers Union, and the Bass Angler Sports Society. John was avid can collector and LA Dodgers fan. He enjoyed going to garage sales, camping, and playing cards with family and friends. Most of all, John cherished spending his time with his kids and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Marilyn Lou Henry of Scipio, survivors include daughters, Mary (Tony) Polk of North Vernon, Marcy (Greg) Ross of North Vernon, and Marissa (Jerry) Troupe of North Vernon; sons, Dale (Della) Skaggs of Columbus, and John “Hank” (Merindy Carpenter) Henry Jr. of Indianapolis; sister, Jeanette Bowman of Vienna; brothers, Russell Henry of Austin, David Henry of Vienna, and Bruce Henry of Austin; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Doris Cleo and Ruth Edna Henry; brothers, Richard and Robert Henry.

Memorial donations can be made through the funeral home to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
