COLUMBUS, Ind. — Indiana State Police said they will release Tuesday afternoon the identity of a suspect who was shot after suspicious activity was reported in the 3300 block of Grove Parkway Sunday morning, and will also release the name of the Columbus Police officer who shot him.

The state police have been investigating the incident since early Sunday morning when a homeowner, who was on vacation, called 911 to report than an unknown person was on his property in the Forest Park residential neighborhood north of National Road at 4:05 a.m.,  police said.

A Columbus police officer arrived at the residence at about 4:12 a.m., state police said. At 4:13 a.m., the officer reported shots had been fired. The officer requested an ambulance which arrived approximately one minute later to provide medical care, and the Columbus Regional ambulance transported the adult male directly to Columbus Municipal Airport to a Lifeline helicopter. He was then airlifted to Level 1 trauma center IU Health Methodist Hospital where he remains in critical condition, state police said Monday.

The Indiana State Police took over the investigation at the request of the Columbus Police Department after it was learned an officer had discharged a weapon in the incident, investigators said. The officer was not injured.

An earlier Columbus Police Department news release said the officer arrived at the residence and located an armed suspect outside the home. A short time later, Columbus police said, a CPD officer discharged his firearm an undetermined number of times, striking the suspect.

A firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting, investigators said.

The CPD officer was placed on administrative leave which is department protocol and was scheduled to be interviewed by Indiana State Police as part of the investigation, investigators said.

ORIGINAL STORY

A suspect involved in “suspicious activity” near a home in the 3300 block of Grove Parkway was shot and critically injured in a CPD-involved shooting early Sunday morning.

The homeowner in the Forest Park residential neighborhood north of National Road was on vacation but noticed security footage showing an unknown person on his property at 4:05 a.m. Sunday, Indiana State Police said. The homeowner contacted 911 to report the suspicious activity.

A Columbus police officer arrived at the residence at approximately 4:12 a.m., state police said. At 4:13 a.m., the officer reported shots had been fired, Indiana State Police said. The officer requested an ambulance which arrived on scene approximately one minute later to provide medical care to the suspect.

An earlier CPD news release said the CPD officer arrived at the residence and located an armed suspect outside of the home. A short time later, the CPD officer discharged his firearm an undetermined number of times striking the suspect, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers on scene rendered medical aid to the suspect, who is an adult white male. The suspect was transported directly to the Columbus Municipal Airport where he was flown by medical helicopter to IU Methodist Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center in Indianapolis, for treatment.

A firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting, Harris said.

The suspect was undergoing surgery Sunday and believed to be in critical condition, state police said.

The officer was not injured in the shooting and has been placed on administrative leave per Columbus Police Department protocol, Harris said.

On Sunday morning, investigators from the Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police were congregating around an area near a shed on the property where the shooting took place. Yellow police tape marked off the area of the investigation in the neighborhood.

Indiana State Police investigators declined to name the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting, citing that it is an active and ongoing investigation. Investigators said once the criminal investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office for their review and determination of charges, if any, to be filed.

Assisting agencies at the scene were the sheriff’s department, Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Regional Health EMS and Indiana University Lifeline Helicopter.
