Domestic violence suspect surrenders after standoff with SWAT

Horning

Staff Reports

Columbus police and the SWAT team brought a domestic violence incident to an end after a more than three-hour standoff at a home in the 5000 block of Sheridan Drive.

CPD officers were sent to the residence at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and attempted to make contact with a man inside the home, who did not communicate with officers.

The Columbus Police Department SWAT team, which is comprised of officers from CPD as well as the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, was activated after officers learned that the suspect had access to weapons inside the home.

Crisis negotiators from the Columbus Police Department attempted to make contact with the man inside the home, however, he also refused to talk with them.

SWAT officers introduced tear gas into the home and the suspect, who was identified as Brandon L. Horning, 47, of 6125 Sheridan Drive, surrendered to officers without incident shortly before noon, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Horning was placed under arrest and transported to Columbus Regional Hospital and later taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of domestic battery and strangulation.

Horning was being held in jail in lieu of $15,000 bond, jail officials said.
