Letter: Rep. Pence’s Capitol letter hypocritical and self-serving

There are multiple reasons to be unimpressed with Rep. Greg Pence, but I will focus on just one – hypocrisy – realizing it is about the only thing both parties agree on.

In Pence’s Feb. 9 letter to the editor (“Rep. Pence: Open the people’s House to the American people”), he complains about the US Capitol being closed to most of the public since spring of 2020. While largely because of COVID, the closure is also due in part to the Jan. 6, 2020, insurrection (or reasonable political discourse for those who had their eyes shut). He fails to mention that the events of that day, and hence the continued closure of the Capitol, were caused by his supreme leader.

Perhaps the most offensive part of Pence’s letter is his stating that the closure “has only served to further isolate the American people from their representatives in government and the very people members of Congress serve.” That Greg Pence would claim to represent or serve anyone but himself is laughable. He must think we have forgotten that, following the attack on the Capitol, which included threats against the life of his brother, then-Vice President Mike Pence, he went right back into the House chamber that same night and voted to overturn the will of the people he claims to represent. He was not alone, as 146 of his Republican colleagues (nearly one-third of the House) did likewise.

Rep. Pence did this not to uphold the Constitution, but to destroy it, in a pathetic attempt to turn a loser into a winner. He also did this to protect himself from the wrath of said loser, which could jeopardize his job security.

This November, let’s make sure he knows we have not forgotten how he violated his oath on Jan. 6, 2020. Let us elect a man or woman, Republican or Democrat, who will take seriously the oath to uphold the Constitution and who will represent our interests and not those of himself or a demagogue.
