Driver heading wrong way on Third Street arrested

A Michigan man was arrested Saturday night after he was observed driving the wrong way on Third Street.

Shortly before midnight, a Columbus Police Department officer observed a vehicle heading towards him on Third Street near Sycamore Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. The officer pulled over the wrong-way driver, who was later identified as Andrew T. Chandler, 31, of Mason, Michigan.

While speaking with Chandler, officers noted that his speech was slurred, Harris said.

The officers also observed several alcoholic beverage containers inside of his vehicle. After failing several field sobriety exercises, Chandler submitted to a blood draw at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was later placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (endangerment).

Chandler was later released after posting $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
