North edges Floyd
FLOYDS KNOBS — Second-ranked Columbus North opened its season Tuesday with a 3-2 win at No. 17 Floyd Central.
The Bull Dogs got wins in the three singles positions. Ashlie Wilson downed Sophia Wood 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Kathryn Wilson topped Ivy Hasenour 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Aya Saad defeated Ella Leitner 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
North’s Tiffany Fu and Annabelle Sun fell to Millie Meunier and Libby Banet 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Siri Poludasu and Leah George lost to Kaitlyn Jones and Zoe Varnderhoof 4-6, 6-4 (10-6) at No. 2 doubles.
Shelbyville nips East
Shelbyville won in three of the five positions to come away with a 3-2 win over Columbus East.
The wins for the Olympians (0-4) came No. 2 singles, where Catherine Millwood blanked Emma Sandman 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 3 singles, where Ruth Federle defeated Faye-Lynn Voss 6-2, 6-2.
East’s Katie Hong fell to Jaidyn Tackett 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Shruthika Kumar and Katey Rieckers lost to Karlee Lawson and Renee Aldridge 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Ashlynn Waddle and Avery Brooks fell to Riley Lee and Sydney Baker 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Eagles slip past Braves
TRAFALGAR — Brown County picked up wins in three spots and edged out Indian Creek 3-2.
Anna Stogsdill topped Lauren Lewis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Anna Tipton prevailed over Zoe Rayback 3-6, 6-4, 8-6 at No. 2 singles for the Eagles. Mary Rygiel and Julia Hart defeated Avery Burress and Addyson Tunell 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Mattie Satter fell to Lauren Foster 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Katie Tipton and Abie Bowman lost to Olivia Perry and Emilee Scott 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
BASEBALL
East upsets Millers
NOBLESVILLE — Columbus East went on the road and pulled out a 4-2 win at Noblesville.
Dylan Niese went 2 for 4, and Will Rieckers had two RBIs for the Olympians (3-2-1). Alex McComb clubbed a home run.
Will Boyer picked up the win for East. Logan Christophel notched the save.
Pioneers edge Panthers
NORTH VERNON — Providence pushed across a run in the top of the eighth to claim a 3-2 win at Jennings County.
Cole Sigler went 2 for 2 for the Panthers (6-2).
TRACK AND FIELD
East girls win tri meet
SHELBYVILLE — Columbus East’s girls won a tri meet at Shelbyville, scoring 97 points to 37 for Southwestern (Shelby) and 31 for Shelbyville.
Emma Gray won the 100 meters (13.20 seconds) and 300 hurdles (51.44), and Chloe Krueger took the 800 (2:45.82) and 3,200 (13:24.00) to lead the Olympians. Other individual winners were Gabbie Meier in the pole vault (7 feet), Jenna Guse in the high jump (4-4), and Norah Dwenger in the 400 (1:05.84).
East also swept the 4×800 (11:21.59), 4×100 (53.67) and 4×400 (4:32.94) relays.
Hauser boys take second
INDIANAPOLIS — Hauser’s boys finished second in a quad meet at Indianapolis Lutheran. The host Saints won with 102 points to 71 for the Jets, 27 for University and 25 for Wisdom Builders.
Aleck Lopez won the long jump (20-11) and 400 (54.00), and Colin Kistler took the 1,600 (5:10.00) and 3,200 (12:59.56) to lead Hauser.
The Jet girls finished fourth. University won with 71 to 67 for Lutheran, 37 for Wisdom Builders and 21 for Hauser.
The Jets’ Lilly Lockridge won the long jump with a leap of 13-7.
Cougars sweep tri meet
GREENSBURG — South Decatur swept a tri meet on its senior night. The Cougar boys scored 101 points to 24 for Shawe Memorial and 14 for Crothersville, while the South Decatur girls scored 79 points to 42 for Crothersville and 26 for Shawe.
Lucas Ballard led the Cougar boys with wins in the long jump (19-4), 100 (11.2) and 200 (24.6). McKinley Shook took the high jump (5-6) and 110 hurdles (17.2), and Rhett Martin captured the discus (114-0) and 300 hurdles (46.7) Ian Frensemeier won the shot put (41-5), Kelby Shook took the 400 (56.2), Josh Shouse captured the 3,200 (11:49) and South Decatur also swept the 4×800 (9:56), 4×100 (46.1) and 4×400 (4:05) relays.
Individual winners for the Cougar girls were Alli Nobbe in the discus (86-5), Kiley Best in the 100 hurdles (16.7), Zoe Meer in the 100 (13.2), Hanna Gridley in the 400 (1:15.8), Maria Nobbe in the 300 hurdles (52.8) and Brayley Sundal in the 200 (29.2). South Decatur also swept the 4×800 (13:00), 4×100 (55.0) and 4×400 (5:01) relays.
SOFTBALL
East falls to Pirates
GREENSBURG — Columbus East outhit Greensburg 11-9, but the Pirates pulled out a 6-5 victory.
Kenzie Foster went 3 for 3 with two triples for the Olympians (1-5). Megan Kennedy went 2for 3 with a double, Kaylee Cole went 2 for 4 with a double and Addy Ross went 2 for 4.
Rebels top Crusaders
Columbus Christian dropped a 17-2 decision to the Southwestern (Hanover) JV.
Mariah Holt and Brooke Nolan had hits for the Crusaders (0-2).
Trinity tops Saints
INDIANAPOLIS — Trinity Lutheran remained unbeaten with a 6-4 win at Indianapolis Lutheran.
Ally Russell had two hits and two RBIs, and Bailey Tabeling had two hits for the Cougars. Grace Lance had two RBIs and threw a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts.
BOYS LACROSSE
North picks up win
Columbus North rolled to a 10-1 win against Lawrence North on Monday.
Owen Barkes netted two goals and two assists, and Evan Federle and Lucas Fedewa each had two goals and one assist. Kameron Nielsen recorded one goal and two assists; Nathan Wettschurack, Naren Harianth and Lucas Taylor all scored one goal and Curran O’Connor added one assist.
Brayson Bennett notched 11 saves.
