Former juvenile magistrate Lindsey Holden-Kay won the Republican nomination for Bartholomew County prosecutor Tuesday.

She defeated Joshua Scherschel — one of the county’s deputy prosecutors — with 61.62% of the vote. The vote totals showed 3,917 people voted for Holden-Kay, and 2,440 voted for Scherschel (38.38%). No Democratic candidates filed for the primary.

Holden-Kay was appointed in 2020 to replace now-retired Heather Mollo as juvenile magistrate. Holden-Kay later stepped down to run for prosecutor.

Scherschel serves as one of Bartholomew County’s deputy prosecutors. He also has been in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and serves as Judge Advocate, leading the legal office of the 181st Intelligence Wing, Indiana Air National Guard.

As votes were coming in Tuesday night, Holden-Kay said she felt “humbled,” excited for the future and grateful to her supporters.

“It’s really awesome to have a vision for what you think public safety should look like in your community and have so many people get on board with it and get excited about it,” she added.

Outgoing county prosecutor Bill Nash announced in early 2021 that he wouldn’t seek another term and later filed to run against State Rep. Ryan Lauer for the Republican nomination for Indiana House District 59. Lauer defeated Nash with 68.05% of the vote in that primary race.
