Braun meets with state, local leaders in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Sen. Mike Braun, R-Indiana, visited Columbus Friday, briefly touring Zaharakos and eating lunch with city and state leaders. The congressman also took some time to answer questions from The Republic about his thoughts on inflation and gun violence.

Debates about gun control have increased in the past month due to recent mass shootings, such as last week’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. According to the Associated Press, the 18-year-old attacker killed two teachers and 19 students, including a 10-year-old boy who had relatives in Columbus. On Wednesday a gunman shot and killed four people, as well as himself, at a medical office in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Braun said that such events are “horrific.” In looking at potential solutions to gun violence, he said there is some support for red flag laws and looking at mental health.

He noted that it’s important to look at the “low-hanging fruit” that is more likely to win over a Senate majority.

“It’s a question of what you can get done,” he said.
