Collins takes second straight family memorial race

Tyler Collins of North Vernon won the Ted and Sue Collins Memorial Race on Sunday at Rock Crest Raceway in Vernon.

It was Collins’ second win in the crate late model event, which honors his late grandparents, who promoted the track from 1981-89. The track was formally known as Twin Cities Raceway Park.

Trent Green finished in second, followed by Britan Godsey, Tory Collins and Rick Gumm. Completing the top 10 were Alan Magner, Brad Barrow, Brad Erwin, Caleb Schryer and Tyler Cain.

Other division winners were Derek Groomer of Bloomington (modifieds), Zach Sasser of Bedford (super stocks), Jacob Owens of North Vernon (hornets) and Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh (pure stocks).

The next scheduled race at Rock Crest will be June 17 with the Boss Series 410 non-wing sprints, along with the super stocks, hornets and crown vics.

James wins Wilson Memorial

Scott James cashed in on the $5000-to-win Slicker Graphics Super Late Model feature, getting his first Brownstown Speedway win of 2022. The second-generation racer from Lawrenceburg captured the Bobby Wilson Memorial Race on May 28. A total of 136 cars were entered for the night’s races.

James jumped out to the lead at the start of the race and never look back in a caution-free feature event. Second-through-fifth would be Josh Rice, Jason Jameson, Devin Gilpin and Chad Stapleton. Finishing out the top 10 were James Rice, Joe Godsey, Billy Moyer, Steve Peeden and Greg Johnson.

Derek Groomer took the US Air Force Modified feature win, being the fourth different Modified winner this year. Groomer got the win ahead of Jordan Wever, Brayden Watson, Jacoby Hines and Brent Lee.

The Pewter Hall Super Stocks ran two features for the night. The winner of the May 14 makeup feature and the winner of the regular nigh’s feature would be the same. Zach Sasser recorded two feature wins in one night. In the regular night’s feature Sasser led Tucker Chastain, Greg Amick, Trey Chastain and Lee Hobbs at the checkers.

Cain’s Tree Service Hornets also ran two feature events for the night. The May 14 makeup feature winner was Zach Johnson of Columbus. This was Johnson’s first feature win of 2022.

The regular nigh’s feature saw Jacob Owens in Victory Lane. Owens came in ahead of Davey Waggoner, Zach Johnson, Curtis Roccia and Michael Brewer.

Flag 2 Flag Media Crown Vics saw someone other than a Cranmer in Victory Lane. Aaron Seay got his first feature win of the year. Michael Cranmer, Trevor Cranmer, Mike Basham and Joel Smith trailed Seay at the checkers

The 2022 Indiana USAC Midget Week will be at Lawrenceburg Speedway tonight and at the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt Sunday night. Next week’s slate will see Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis (Wednesday), Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville (Thursday), Gas City I-69 Speedway (Friday) and Kokomo Speedway (June 11).

From 70 years ago in 1952 at Columbus Speedway, Wayne Ford won the feature race over Crowbar Taylor and Red Carmichael.

From 50 years ago this weekend in 1972 at Brownstown, Jim Curry won the late model feature over Jack Owens, Ed Covey, Russ Petro and Dennis Boknecht.

Also, from this weekend 50 years ago, Hillbilly Ogle won the feature race at Twin Cities Speedway over Bob Wolfschlag and Leo Boner.

Also, from 50 years ago, Butch Wilkerson won the sprint car feature at Paragon over Allen Barr, Mike Waltz, Larry Miller and Sheldon Kinser. Steve Bowlen won the stock car feature.

Also from 30 years ago at Haubstadt, Randy Kinser won the sprint car feature over Larry Bland and Kevin Briscoe. Kevin Claycomb took the late model feature over Doug McCammon and Mike Gibbs.

From 1992 at Paragon Kevin Thomas won the sprint car feature over Larry Bland, Kevin Briscoe, Tony Elliott and Allen Barr. Dave Peeden won the pro stock feature with Kenny Carmichael winning the modified feature and Dale Hobbs took the bomber feature.
