Letter: Methodist Church hasn’t split, though some churches left

From: The Rev. Mary W. Cartwright, Nashville United Methodist Church

Nashville

I read with interest the article in The Republic’s Faith and Community section (“Texas church to self-appoint LGBTQ pastors after bishop denies request”, June 11), in which The Dallas Morning News reported on the Texas church which self-appointed LGBTQ pastors. However, the penultimate paragraph was incorrect.

The article stated that the United Methodist denomination has formally split, and that is not true. An independent denomination called the Global Methodist Church has formed and some churches in Indiana have disaffiliated from the UMC, but the United Methodist Church has taken no vote that could be designated as an official split.

Thank you for printing this correction.
