COLUMBUS

Donald E. Hughes, 84, of Columbus, passed from this life at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mr. Hughes was born May 31, 1938, in Howard County, the son of Robert M. and May D. Pinegar Hughes.

He married Sharon Sue Simpson November 10, 1957, at Southside Christian Church in Kokomo. She preceded him in death April 20, 2008. He later married Mabel Yvonne Lyle Coulter October 9, 2009, at Bible Church of Columbus.

Mr. Hughes was a 1956 graduate of Kokomo High School where he was on the basketball, track and football teams.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, proudly serving his country from 1959 – 1961.

He worked at Chrysler for 10 years and owned and operated a nursery and garden center in Greentown.

He was owner of All In One Self Storage, batting cages in Columbus and Sparkle Car Wash’s from 1978 until his retirement in 1989.

He attended Heritage Baptist Church, loved Bible study, bike riding, hiking with his brothers, bass fishing with his grandsons and belonged to the Rolling Hills Bass Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel; sons, Mark Andrew (Carol Rodgers) Hughes of Shelbyville and Neil Armstrong Hughes of Columbus; daughter, Kelli Kay Hill (Tim Gilpin) of Columbus; step-daughters, Teresa Yvonne (David) Farris and Angela Rose (Jeffrey) Elkins all of Columbus; grandchildren, Ethan Tyler (Taletha) Hill, Seth Eli (Morgan) Hill, Shelby Anna Doughty and Cameron Dalton Hughes all of Columbus, Autumn and Evan Hughes both of North Carolina and Nicholas Crinshaw of North Vernon; great-grandchildren, Tucker Ethan Hill, Tristen Andrew Dougherty, Liam Daniel Dougherty, Jameson Mae Dougherty, Brooklyn Hughes and Myleigh Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Sharon Sue Hughes and brothers, Howard Frank Hughes and Gordon Lee Hughes.

The funeral will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor’s Bryan Solomon and Jerry K. Day Sr. officiating.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Private burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
