Carl Walter Eddy

Carl Walter Eddy died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 4, 2022, at Eden Meadows in Oshkosh, WI. He was 90.

Carl was born in Fairmont, IN February 10, 1932, the son of Mary Gladys Eddy and Gerald Eddy. He

attended St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Anderson, IN and then served in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Tripoli, Libya as a jet engine mechanic, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. When he returned stateside with an honorable discharge, he studied Mechanical Engineering at Tri-State

University. Carl graduated in 1958 with a BE degree in Mechanical Engineering and moved to Columbus, IN where he joined Cummins Engine Company. After working at Cummins for over 40 years, Carl took early retirement and began a new career working for True Value Hardware stores in Columbus and later Hope.

Carl married Shirley Lorraine Wilson on July 6, 1959. She passed away on November 23, 1963. They had one son, Michael. Carl married Mary Frances Wietlisbach on April 22, 1967. They had three children, Kevin, Kathy, and Timothy. Mary Frances passed away on August 9, 2004. He married Mary Josephine Bedel on November 25, 2006. She passed away on February 11, 2015.

Carl was always involved in organizations in Columbus including the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, Big Brothers, the American Legion, and the VFW, as well as being a league bowler. Carl was a longtime active member of the St. Columba/St. Bartholomew Church, volunteering as an usher and on the maintenance committee. He was a Fourth Degree member and past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 1414.

Carl loved to attend any family reunion or wedding that he was invited to, possibly due to all the good food but certainly due to a love of family. This love of family drove him to spend countless hours researching the genealogy of his family. Besides genealogy, Carl had many other hobbies including stamp and coin collecting, and anything involving trains or Star Wars.

Although he was not a fan of talking on the phone, Carl craved social interaction. After the death of his 3rd wife, Carl spent much of his time at Columbus' Senior Activity Center. Later, when Carl moved to Parkside Court, he stayed very involved in the numerous activities that they had to offer and made many friends. One of these friends was Joyce Graham, with whom he spent most of his time.

Carl is survived by his four children and their partners: Michael & Kathleen, Kevin & Sonya, Kathleen & Duke, Timothy & Jennifer, as well as his grandchildren, Uriél, Gabriél, Kaitlyn, and Aubryn. In keeping with Carl’s plans, he was cremated, and a funeral service will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church in Columbus on November 11, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. EST with an interment ceremony to follow at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, IN.
