Hauser girls basketball trailed by double digits early in the fourth quarter Tuesday, but the lack of free throw shooting from Shawe Memorial down the stretch kept the Jets in the contest.

The Hilltoppers finished 9 of 22 from the line, but leading scorer Allison Knoebel connected on four straight free throws late to hand the Jets a 50-47 loss on senior night.

Hauser kept itself in the game early with its defense. The Jets made plenty of deflections and forced some turnovers. Shawe didn’t do itself any favors either at the line, where they went 0 for 4 in the first half. The Hilltoppers led 11-10 after the first quarter following a 3-pointer from Yolett Perez right before the buzzer.

In the second quarter, Hauser gave itself plenty of second-chance opportunities, and the Jets took advantage. Madelyn Poe hit a couple jumpers and converted a three-point play to grow the lead to 19-15. Shawe then finished the quarter on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 21-21 at halftime.

“I thought our emotion was good, our attitude was good and our effort was good to start the game. It’s some of the things we talk about,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “At halftime, we always talk about the first four minutes of the second half, and I think the first four minutes of the second really swung the game. Now all of a sudden, we’re behind the 8-ball a little bit. We’ve got to make up for ourselves because we weren’t ready in the first four minutes of the second half.”

In the third quarter, the Hilltoppers turned on the intensity and outrebounded the Jets (1-2) to extend the lead to 28-21. Hauser came charging back following a 3-pointer from Kyliegh Parrott to cut the deficit to 32-31. That was as close as the Jets would get as Shawe finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 39-31.

The Hilltoppers grew the lead to 43-31 early in the fourth quarter, but Hauser stayed in the game due to the missed free throws. The Jets had a couple chances late to tie or take the lead in the closing minute of the game, but were unable to convert a basket.

“We really try to keep people off the line, and tonight, we couldn’t keep them off the line. Luckily, they missed. Second chance points was another thing, they had 10 of their 21 points off second chance points at halftime,” Shipp said. “We’re getting outrebounded and that is something that we will continue to work on is rebound, rebound, rebound. Those little, finer points of the game like rebounding, turnovers, keeping them off the foul line are going help us be better as we continue to go.”

Poe led Hauser with 16 points, and Parrott finished with 14. Knoebel led Shawe with a game-high 22 points.
