COLUMBUS
Marybelle Craig Hines, 97, of Columbus, formerly of Scipio, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus, Indiana.
Marybelle was born March 27, 1925, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Charles Wesley and Gladys Marie Gray Craig.
Marybelle was a 1942 graduate of Scipio High School. She and Wallace Harold “Wally” Hines were married by Rev. Albert Tull on December 18, 1943, in Vernon, Indiana. They had been married 78 years at his passing.
Marybelle was a 75-year member of the Scipio Presbyterian Church and was very active serving as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, President of the Women’s Society and Funeral Dinner Committee, and was the church financial secretary for many, many years.
Marybelle had a natural musical gift which she passed on to her two sons. Without reading music, she played the piano, sang harmony, was the church pianist for 50 plus years, sang in the choir and with “The Trio”. Wallace bought an old pump organ at an auction, brought it home and she played that, too.
She was also very active in the Scipio community. She helped organize the Scipio Elementary School PTA, was a 4-H leader and member of the Scipio Home Economics Club.
She served as Treasurer of the Scipio Fire Department for many years and in 1971 she started working as a clerk at the Scipio Post Office, retiring in 1987.
Marybelle was a homemaker in every sense of the word and loved taking care of her home and family. She enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. As many know, she enjoyed decorating her home for all occasions and holidays, especially Christmas, her favorite time of the year. And, with family help, the decorating continued the many years she lived at Silver Oaks for her to enjoy.
Marybelle is survived by her children, Rebecca Umphrey of North Vernon, Boni Fewell of The Villages, Florida, W. Wesley (Machel) Hines of Scipio, Laura (Kevin) Johnson of Columbus, and T. Scott (Tamika) Hines of Scipio; grandchildren, Craig (Kerry) Umphrey, Jon (Lindsey Stewart) Fewell, Sarah Fewell, Robert Fewell, Chad (Bethany) Fewell, Andra Baker, Erin Estes, Emily Moorman, Joby Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Jessica Marshall, and Matthew Hines; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; a sister, Ann Williams; her husband; and her sons-in-law, Scott Fewell and James Umphrey.
The funeral service for Marybelle will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Dove-Sharp &Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Kendall Wildey officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Scipio Cemetery in Scipio.
The family has requested that no flowers or floral arrangements be sent due to many family allergies.
Memorials in honor of Marybelle may be made through the funeral home to the Scipio Presbyterian Church.
