Local man arrested after more than 3-hour standoff with SWAT

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested after a 3 ½ hour standoff with law enforcement officers on Thanksgiving evening.

At approximately 7:17 p.m. Thursday, Columbus police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6500 block of West State Road 46 in regards to a report of shots fired, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers were advised that Jerry L. Lucas, 74, of Columbus, discharged a firearm at a neighbor who was believed to have been struck with shrapnel but was not seriously injured, Harris said.

Lucas entered his home prior to the officers arrival and refused to exit, Harris said.

A short time later, the Columbus Police Department SWAT Team, which is comprised of officers from the Columbus Police Department as well as the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office was activated along with CPD crisis negotiators.
After lengthy standoff, Lucas was taken into custody at approximately 10:50 p.m.
He was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he remanded on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He remains incarcerated on a 48 hour hold.
Additional charges are possible in this ongoing investigation.
