Athletes of the Week

Damon Edwards

MALE

Damon Edwards // Columbus North senior basketball player

Edwards recorded 10 points and four rebounds in a 40-38 first-round win against Franklin and 12 points and six rebounds in a 67-59 win against Whiteland in Saturday’s North Sectional final.

His performance last week: “Against East, I didn’t have the best performance, but the first game, I felt like I helped pace us and slow us down to where we’re just running our offense and being ourselves, so it was just playing my role.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I actually go home and play video games. The game I play is called ‘Rainbow Six Siege,’ and it just helps me get my mind going. It’s a sharp thinking game.”

Favorite drink: “Strawberry Lemonade”

Favorite food: “Steak”

Favorite class: “Hoosiers (basketball class)”

Favorite sports team: “Purdue”

Favorite athlete: “Kevin Durant”

Role model: “My dad and mom (Daniel and Tracey Edwards)”

Best advice: “From our book that we’ve been reading (‘Chop Wood, Carry Water’), ‘Play in the present. You just have to be in the moment. Don’t let anything carry you away like officials or anything. Just keep playing in the moment, play with your friends.’ Like in the sectional, I was playing in the present, playing with my friends and having fun.”

Athletics goal: “If it’s possible, get to the NFL somehow. I think if I work hard at the D-III level first and then maybe get up to Division I, I feel like I have a chance to maybe be a free agent, practice squad member, which wouldn’t be bad to me.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Probably Rome. My step-mom’s family is from Italy, and my grandparents, before they died, I got to learn some cool words, and they made authentic Italian spaghetti.”

FEMALE

Reese Euler // Columbus North sophomore gymnast

Reese Euler

Euler won the vault, beam and floor on her way to capturing the all-around competition and leading the Bull Dogs to a runner-up team finish in Friday’s Franklin Central Regional.

Her performance last week: “I feel really good about it because even though I scored in the 8s on bars and messed up a little, I still managed to hit everything else to the best of my ability and didn’t let one event affect my performance.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I wear my pink slippers, and me and Laney (Acton) have a prayer we say before we compete.”

Favorite drink: “Starbucks Strawberry Lemonade Refreshers with raspberry”

Favorite food: “Chipotle bowls”

Favorite class: “I like my Dental I class with Mrs. (Abby) Selby”

Favorite sports team: “Kentucky gymnastics”

Favorite athlete: “(Kentucky gymnast) Raena Worley”

Role model: “My dad (James Euler). I feel like he always works really hard, and he’s taught me a lot of life lessons and to never give up.”

Best advice: “One thing my parents always tell me that if one event isn’t the best, always try to pick up on the other events, and to never give up and always fight for everything.”

Athletics goal: “I want to cheer in college or my junior or senior year or this year, to win an event at state or get top three all-around.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I want to go to Punta Cana because next year is when Laney and I, for her senior trip, we’re going to get to go together, and I’m just excited because I’ve never been on a trip with my friends.”
