Bull Dogs win invite

Willy Davis fired a 75 to earn medalist honors and lead 19th-ranked Columbus North to the team title at Saturday’s season-opening Edinburgh Invitational.

The Bull Dogs finished with a 323 team score at Timbergate. Shelbyville took second with a 336, and Columbus East was third with a 348.

North’s Tyler Wilks tied for second individually with a 78. Joseph Perkins added an 83, John Merritt shot 87 and Jack Schiavello had a 91.

Ben Luedeke led the Olympians with an 84. Pierce Arnholt carded an 85, Carter Greene added an 88, Jamall Starks shot 91 and Spencer Erfmeier had a 98.

Host Edinburgh finished 15th with a 406. Max Blandford led the Lancers with an 84, followed by Wyatt Burton at 99, Devyn Milburn 111, Mason Calhoun 112 and Keegan Smith 118.

Hauser came in 16th at 419. Hunter Pappano led the Jets with an 86, while Brendon Burton shot 108, Caleb Wallace 112, Marshall Moody 113 and Colton Hatton 120.

Trinity Lutheran finished 17th with a 444. Jack Stuckwish led the Cougars with a 91, while Wylie Jones added a 108, Alex Overgaard shot 121 and Gabe Lorenz had a 124.

Meanwhile, the North and East “B” teams, along with the Jennings County varsity, played in the Seymour Invitational at Shadowood. No. 2-ranked Guerin Catholic won with a 315.

Jennings finished sixth with a 378. Jake Grider led the Panthers with a 91, while Jack George carded a 93, Eli Simmons added a 94, Davey Shaw shot 100 and Tanner Stearns had a 101.

The Bull Dogs came in seventh with a 385. Luke Friend shot 90, Alex Clark 95, Carter Battin 96, Brennan Kushman 104 and Parker Brown 119.

The Olympians finished 10th with a 429. Luke Rice led East with a 100, followed by Keaton Stephenson at 107, Cole Harvey 110, Josh Saewert 112 and Mason Reeves 117.

GIRLS TENNIS

East opens with loss

NEW ALBANY — Columbus East opened its season with a 4-1 loss at New Albany.

Ruth Federle beat Katie Sullivan 6-4, 7-6 (7) at No. 3 singles for the lone Olympian point.

East’s Lauren Degner fell to Claire Meyer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Katie Hong lost to Corinne Miller 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Shruthika Kumar and Katey Rieckers fell to Lily Meyer and Natalie Saydesa at No. 1 doubles, and Allie Gribbons and Avery Brooks lost to Macie Crone and Maddie Packova at No. 2 doubles, both by 6-1, 6-0 scores.

Jets fall to Trojans

INDIANAPOLIS — Hauser scored four times in the fifth to tie the game, but Bishop Chatard answered with one in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to claim a 10-6 victory.

Holden Pittman went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and allowed only one earned run over the first 4.1 innings on the mound for the Jets (0-2). Stryker Gill went 2 for 4.

Panthers split pair

WESTFIELD — Jennings County bounced back from a 16-1, five-inning first-game loss to Norwell by picking up its first win of the season, an 8-0 shutout of Seeger in their second game of the day at Grand Park.

Keegan Manowitz had the lone hit for the Panthers against Norwell, which pounded out 21 hits against four Jennings pitchers.

Manowitz went 3 for 5 and allowed only three hits over the first six innings on the mound against Seeger. Ryan Schuck went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Austin Byford went 2 for 5, Cole Sigler had a triple and two RBIs and Logan Napier added two RBIs for the Panthers (1-2).

SOFTBALL

Panthers edge Bears

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County rallied with two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win against Shelbyville.

Riley Byford went 2 for 3, and Jillian Brauer went 2 for 4 for the Panthers (3-1). Brauer picked up the win in relief of Kenzie Matern.
