Cummins Inc. said that it has signed an agreement with one of India’s biggest automakers to manufacture a range of low- to zero-emissions products over the next few years.

The Columbus-based company announced Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with Tata Motors Limited, a company that Cummins has had a joint venture with for 30 years.

As a part of this agreement, Cummins and Tata Motors have established a new business entity called TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary under the company’s existing joint venture.

The new subsidiary will focus on the development and manufacturing of sustainable technology products, including hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, fuel delivery systems, battery electric powertrains and fuel cell electric systems through the recently launched Accelera by Cummins brand.

The low- to zero-emissions technologies developed by new subsidiary will be integrated into both on-highway and off-highway applications for domestic and international markets, Cummins said.

Cummins officials said they expect the agreement to play a pivotal role in developing sustainable powertrain solutions that will help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and support India’s net-zero ambitions.

“Progress requires partnership, and I am delighted that we are embarking on this decarbonization journey with our trusted partner of 30 years – Tata Motors,” said Cummins President and CEO Jennifer Rumsey in a statement. “Together, we will advance low- and zero-emissions technologies in a way that is best for our customers, communities and the planet. By doing so, we are also unlocking new opportunities to innovate for our employees all over the world and those who share our passion for powering a more prosperous world.”
