United Way of Bartholomew County is giving residents a chance to give back to the community during the annual Day of Caring on Friday.

Day of Caring is a full-day volunteer event that connects local businesses and community members with non-profit agencies and organizations to complete needed work.

Approximately 500 volunteers are expected to fan out across the community to 22 organizations to make a positive difference in Bartholomew County.

A variety of volunteer projects will be completed, including planting flowers, mulching, painting, organizing, and sorting donations. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels can participate.

“Day of Caring is an incredible event that connects our community volunteers with service projects that truly help Bartholomew County,” said Alicia Monroe, Volunteer Action Center director at United Way of Bartholomew County. “We are grateful for the hundreds of volunteers who give their time and effort to make our community better.”

United Way of Bartholomew County President Mark Stewart has long said that many residents are far more willing to support area nonprofits financially after seeing agency needs and their work up close as a volunteer on outreaches such as Day of Caring.

Residents have a strong track record of being generous with their time. For example, in 2015, Day of Caring drew about 1,700 participants from companies throughout Bartholomew County who tackled about 30 projects.

Through the years, volunteers have built home ramps for the disabled, tackled painting projects, coordinated landscaping efforts and much more.
