BCSC to have special meeting Tuesday seeking waiver on school calendar

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will hold a special school board meeting Tuesday night to consider a waiver regarding the 2023-24 school year calendar.

The school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom of the BCSC administration building to vote on whether to apply for a “professional development flexibility waiver” from the state. There will be a time of public comment prior to the vote.

School board meetings are livestreamed on BCSC’s YouTube channel.

According to Communications Coordinator Josh Burnett, the school corporation would like to pursue a waiver that would allow it to measure the 2023-24 school year in terms of hours rather than days, which would help when it comes to providing professional development days for staff.

If approved by the Indiana State Board of Education, the waiver would not change BCSC’s 2023-24 calendar but would simply allow the school corporation to go ahead with the calendar as planned, said Burnett.

The current schedule for next school year includes 176 student days and four professional development days: Sept. 5, Nov. 27, Feb. 19 and April 8.

Once Tuesday’s special meeting is concluded, the board will hold an executive session “to train school board members with an outside consultant about the performance of the role of the members as public officials.”
