State champ Wilson headed to Purdue

Kathryn Wilson is headed to West Lafayette.

The incoming Columbus North senior, who just won the Girls Tennis Singles State championship on Saturday, made her college decision Wednesday to continue her tennis career at Purdue.

Wilson also had another serious offer in Xavier, but the chance to play for the Boilermakers was too hard to pass up.

“I’ve wanted to play tennis at Purdue, so I’m so excited that I get the opportunity to do that,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s college choice may come as little surprise to some in the community, given her family history. Her mother Mary Beth was a tennis player at Purdue, and her sister Ashlie just finished her freshman season with the Boilermakers.

When Kathryn Wilson made her campus visit, she liked the team’s work ethic, as well as the energy and atmosphere.

“They‘re all super nice, and I know them pretty well compared to other teams,” Wilson said. “They’re really nice people, and they’re all really accepting and really sweet.”

Wilson is anxious to have her sister as a teammate again after they were teammates with the Bull Dogs for two years.

“I’m so excited. We are super close, and I think we make each other better. It’ll be really fun to be able to play next to her again,” Wilson said.

Wilson is relieved she got her college choice out of the way, which has been a dream of hers ever since she picked up a racket at about 3 years old.

“It’s definitely a stress reliever. I’ve been worrying about it for a very long time. I had my visit with Purdue last September, so it’s been a long time,” she said. “I’m happy they offered it to me, and I’m excited to be able to just go and play and not have to worry about it.”
