Prep sports notebook: Local pair help South to All-Star sweep

Columbus North’s Maddi Rutan and Columbus East’s Kenzie Foster helped the South to a doubleheader sweep of the North in the annual Indiana Softball Coaches Association North-South All-Star Classic for recently graduated seniors.

Rutan went 3 for 4 at the plate and pitched three scoreless innings, while Foster went 2 for 3 with a sacrifice. They knocked in the first two runs of the first game, which the South won 17-6 before prevailing 7-2 in the second game.

Rutan is headed to Eastern Kentucky, and Foster is headed to Syracuse.

Meanwhile, Ron McDonald, who retired as North coach following the spring season, became the first coach from Columbus to coach in the All-Star Classic.

Cougars selected IHSCBA All-State

Two players from South Decatur have been recognized on the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State squad.

Senior catcher Avery Seegers and junior pitcher Devin Pate are honorable mention selections in Class A.

Weichman named Trinity golf coach

Kylie Weichman, who has coached the Columbus East girls golf team the past three years, has been named the girls golf coach at Trinity Lutheran.

This spring, Weichman accepted a position on Trinity’s girls basketball coaching staff. She has been an assistant at East the past 12 years.

East to hold boys basketball camp

New Columbus East boys basketball coach Perry Nash will be holding a camp July 17 to 20. Times are 4 to 5 p.m. for Grades 1-3, 4 to 5:30 p.m. for Grades 4-6 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. for Grades 7-8.

East athletics to host Tailgate Party

Columbus East will be holding its first Athletics Tailgate Party from 4 to 7 p..m. Aug. 5 in the school’s south parking lot.

The tailgate party will include food trucks, a cornhole tournament and other yard games and bounce houses. There also will be live music from 5 to 7 p.m.

North to host Blue and White Night

Columbus North’s annual Blue and White Night will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5.

The athletics department will host an informational meeting for all student-athletes and their parents in Memorial Gym, and All-Sports passes will be sold throughout the evening. There will be a “Dog Bowl” involving all North fall, winter and spring sports teams at Max Andress Field.
