Wilson wins first two matches in Midwest Open

Kathryn Wilson, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Open 18-and-under Girls Championship, won her first two matches Saturday to advance to the Round of 16.

Wilson, who won the state singles championship as a junior at Columbus North last month, beat Marian Hayes of Island Ranch, Colorado, 6-1, 6-1 and Luicina Barilli of Wilmette, Illinois 6-0, 6-0. She will play No. 16-seed Katelyn Wu of Northbrook, Illinois, at 9:30 a.m. today at North. The quarterfinal is at 1 p.m., and the semifinals and final are Monday morning.

Aya Saad, who will be a junior at North, fell to No. 14-seed Keri Rothenberg of Wilmette, Illinois, 4-1, retired, in the opening round.
