North wins Jeff invite

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus North kicked off its season Friday and Saturday by winning the eight-team Jeffersonville Invitational.

The Bull Dogs matched Zionsville with 37 points, but won on the tiebreaker. Jasper finished third with 32 points, and Bloomington North was fourth with 26.

Hank Lin won three straight-set matches to capture the No. 1 singles title, and Anvay Atram and Amrit Kar won all three of their matches to take the No. 1 doubles position.

Parth Shah went 2-1 to finish second at No. 2 singles. Austin Clark at No. 3 singles and Yoki Murabayashi and Michael Crossman at No. 2 doubles went 3-2 to finish third.

Jets notch first win

HOPE — Hauser picked up its first win of the season Saturday, a 4-1 victory against Rushville.

Hunter Pappano beat Clayton Chase 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Colten Hatton topped Mason Mosburg 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the Jets. (1-1). Jentzen Bechtel and Kameron Blair blanked Wesley Mauzy and Edgar Fernandez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Hauser won the No. 2 doubles spot by forfeit.

The Jets’ Caleb Wallace fell to Josh Wainwright 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Knights blank Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County followed its 5-0 Western Indiana Conference loss to Indian Creek on Friday with a 5-0 WIC setback to Northview on Saturday.

Jack Sichting fell to Brayden Goff 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Owen East lost to Gavin Roark 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Jon Kirchhofer fell to Derek Morrison 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (1-2, 0-2).

Brown County’s Trevor Shields and Jax Burt lost to Caden Schrader and Joshua Fowler 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Brandon Seachao and Cord Smith fell to Kamden Kellett and Zac Buell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

East nets first win

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East overcame a first-set setback to rally for its first win of the season, a 20-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-15 Hoosier Hills Conference victory Saturday at Jeffersonville.

Caroline Frost led the Olympians (1-2, 1-0) with 17 kills and four aces. Krea Martin recorded 25 assists, and Chloe Gilley notched seven digs.

Also for East, Anika Jenkins pounded four kills, and Jenna Guse and Chloe Gill each added three kills. Martin had four digs; and Gilley, Guse and Addison Emery all served two aces.

Bull Dogs go 2-2

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North went 2-2 in Saturday’s Franklin Central Invitational. The Bull Dogs beat Pioneer 25-23, 25-22; fell to Zionsville 25-19, 25-10 and Pendleton Heights 25-20, 25-15 and beat Martinsville 25-15, 25-22.

Morgan Osborn led the Bull Dogs (3-3) with 41 digs and four aces. Kennedy Horn pounded 18 kills, Holly Evans recorded 40 assists and Dutro had one solo and two assist blocks.

Also for North, Dutro tallied 17 kills and Reese Edwards notched 31 assists. Kaitlin White had three block assists, Horn added two block assists and Evans served three aces.

Lancers, Jets play

HENRYVILLE — Edinburgh beat Hauser 17-25, 25-22, 15-10 on its way to a 2-2 record in the Henryville Round-Robin on Saturday. The Lancers then fell to North Harrison 25-20, 25-21; beat Henryville 25-20, 25-15 and lost to Paoli 25-13, 25-17.

MacKenzie Bieker led Edinburgh (3-5) with 31 kills, eight blocks and 59 digs. Kyah Streeval recorded 95 assists, and Zoey Sida served seven aces.

Also for Edinburgh, Sida tallied 25 kills, five blocks and 55 digs; Kenna Streeval had 16 kills and 44 digs and Jessica Walsh added 13 kills, 49 digs and five aces. Mia Dodson contributed seven blocks, and Bieker served four aces.

Hauser went 1-3. The Jets fell to North Harrison 25-17, 25-14; Edinburgh and Paoli 25-11, 25-22 before beating Henryville 25-13, 25-19.

Kenze Bostic pounded 27 kills, Kayden Miller recorded 61 assists, Aniston Bostic had eight blocks, Gracie Blair notched 28 digs and Haylin Campbell served four aces to lead Hauser (3-4).

Also for the Jets, Kenze Bostic tallied 20 digs and two aces, Aniston Bostic had 19 kills and four aces and Kayden Miller added 12 kills, one block and four aces. Paige McDaniel pounded eight kills and four blocks; Haylin Campbell contributed nine assists and 18 digs; Norah Berkenstock recorded eight kills, six assists and 18 digs; Mattie Foster added one assist, 13 digs and five aces and Blair served three aces.

Mustangs sweep Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County got off to a slow start Saturday in a 25-4, 25-19, 25-16 WIC loss to Edgewood.

Anna Stogsdill led the Eagles (0-2, 0-1) with five kills and 25 digs. Grace Johnson recorded 11 assists, Cady Kemp pounded four kills and Ava Kelly added 19 digs.

Bulldogs nip Trinity

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran battled back from a two-set deficit, but New Albany recovered to pull out a 25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 17-25, 15-8 victory on Saturday.

Carson Bowling recorded 19 kills and four blocks, and Laura Roeder had 23 digs and five aces to lead the Cougars (1-4). Addison Darlage notched 36 assists.

Also for Trinity, Madison Keith tallied 15 kills and 10 digs, and Darlage added 16 digs and one ace. Bowling and Kiley Zabel each served one ace.

East girls take sixth

NASHVILLE — Jennings County’s boys finished fifth with 144 points, and Columbus East’s girls took sixth with 160 points Saturday’s Brown County’s Harrier Classic. No. 10 Bloomington North won the boys meet with 32 points, and No. 9 Bloomington South captured the girls meet with 37 points.

Carly Otte led the Olympian girls with a 16th-place finish in 21 minutes, 38.5 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Victoria Cuhadar took 28th in 22:37.2, while Amelia Fay was 40th in 23:16.6, Madison Swartzentruber 47th in 23:52.6 and Megumi Going 60th in 24:27.9.

Brown County’s had four girls runners, one short of the number needed to score as a team. Sadie Hiatt finished 59th in 24:24.9, while Megan Cumberledge was 74th in 25:19.3, Della Hitchcock 78th in 25:32.7 and Kayleigh Austin 86th (26:05.7).

For the Jennings boys, Kraedyn Young finished third in 16:22.7. Lain Ernstes took 38th in 18:24.9, while Aaron Lewis was 40th (18:26.1), Brock Maschino 43rd (18:36.3) and Dawson Leak 44th (18:37.4).

East finished ninth with 247 points. Jackson Brookes led the Olympians with a 33rd-place finish in 18:14.7, while Lorren Westerfeld was 56th (19:01.7), Austin Menefee 79th (19:49.5), Elijah Clore 83rd (19:54.0) and Stillman Whittington 99th (20:36.0).

Brown County finished 10th with 257 points. Charlie Webb took 27th in 18:00.3, while Eli Wrightsman was 57th (19:02.7), Corbin Brahaum 80th (19:50.2), Kai Koester 93rd (20:30.2) and Carter Condon 121st (21:48.1).

Jet boys finish fifth

SHELBYVILLE — Hauser’s boys finished fifth with 209 points in Southwestern (Shelby)’s Jeremy Wright Small School Invitational Saturday at Blue River Park.

Nolan Dailey and Colin Kistler led the Jets with 10th- and 11th-place finishes in 18:10.4 and 18:12.6. Mason Moore took 60th in 20:26.4, while Kase Meister was 71st (20:42.7) and Koleson Gernentz 83rd (20:57.3).

Trinity Lutheran’s Braxton Sinclair finished 90th in 21:11.6, while Rylan Adair took 139th (22:26.9) and Steven Traver 169th (23:45.9). Edinburgh’s Ethan Campbell was 213th in 29:15.6.

Hauser had three runners in the girls race. Lucie Asher finished 100th in 29:56.5, while Madison Hollman took 117th in 31:47.0 and Addison Dailey was 125th in 34:40.3.

Edinburgh’s Shyleigh Goble finished 127th in 35:21.6.

East falls to Roncalli

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus East came away with a 2-0 loss Saturday at Roncalli.

Kate Stiles recorded three saves for the Olympians (0-2).

Chargers edge Eagles

ROACHDALE — Brown County opened its season with a 4-3 WIC loss at North Putnam on Saturday.

Ava Stogsdill scored two goals, and River Ford added one for the Eagles. Anna Tipton posted five saves.

Spartans stop Jets

SHELBYVILLE — Hauser fell behind early in a 7-1 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss Saturday at Class A No. 16 Southwestern (Shelby).

Lakota Robbins scored on a penalty kick for the Jets (0-2, 0-1). Luke Bruner recorded seven saves.

Panthers split pair

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County beat South Ripley 4-0 and fell to Rock Creek Academy 3-2 on Saturday.

Cole Bingham scored two goals, Chris Hernandez had a goal and an assist and Fernando Abarca added one goal against South Ripley. Berkley Foist and Sam Hernandez each had an assist.

Sam Hernandez and Keiton Miller scored for the Panthers (2-1) against Rock Creek. Abarca and Chris Hernandez had assists. Deken Simpson posted five saves.

Chargers top Eagles

ROACHDALE — Brown County took its first loss of the season, a 7-1 WIC setback Saturday at North Putnam.

Carter Norcutt scored the goal for the Eagles (1-1, 0-1). Marek Reeves recorded eight saves.

GIRLS GOLF

North takes 14th

GREENWOOD — Columbus North finished 14th with a 416 in Center Grove’s Trojan Classic at Hickory Stick on Saturday. No. 2 Carmel won with a 300, followed by No. 1 Westfield (310) and No. 10 Franklin and No. 5 Noblesville (both 312).

Erin Hopkins led the Bull Dogs with an 85. Lindsey Hartwell carded an 87, Ana Pavlov added a 116, Kara Buntin shot 128 and Harper Andreson had a 130.

Eagles finish ninth

JASPER — Brown County finished ninth with a 435 in Saturday’s Jasper Invitational. Bloomington South won with a 367.

Lily VanNess finished fifth individually with an 87 to lead the Eagles. Savannah Poling carded a 104, Chloe Poling added a 116, Caitlin Seet shot 128 and Caitlynn Lookebill had a 140.

Panthers open with win

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County opened its season Friday with a 41-25 win against South Dearborn.

Parker Elmore completed 12 of 17 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score, and Branden Braun carried 15 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns and caught four passes for 81 yards and two scores to lead the Panthers.

Austin Byford had three catches for 94 yards, and Blaine Ison caught a touchdown pass. Ison led the defense with four solo and 11 assisted tackles.

Chargers top Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur scored first Friday, but North Decatur rallied for a 41-14 season-opening victory.

Corbin Johnson gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead with a 24-yard run just 2 minutes into the game. Trailing 20-7 at halftime, Johnson scored again from 16 yards out, and McKinley Shook’s extra point cut the lead to 20-14.

The Chargers scored three touchdowns in the game’s final 15:01 to pull away.

Patriots blank Eagles

SPENCER — Brown County opened its season with a 60-0 loss at Owen Valley on Friday.
