City approves Lowell Road improvement plans

A project that involves widening Lowell Road from County Road 200W to U.S. 31 is expected to be bid out in late 2023.

The Columbus Board of Works approved plans for the project on Tuesday.

“These plans will be submitted to INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) as final tracings, and the project will be bid in December,” said city engineer Andrew Beckort.

The city has contracted with Strand Associates, Inc. on the project for initial engineering and design, landscape design for a roundabout at Lowell Road and County Road 200W, and construction engineering.

“This is from the west side of U.S. 31 to just past County Road 200 West, which is the city limits,” said Marc Rape with Strand. “There will be a roundabout installed at that intersection, which is currently a two-way stop that makes it difficult for people to get onto Lowell Road in the mornings during rush hour. It will be a three lane section all the way, with a five foot concrete sidewalk on the north side and a 10 foot asphalt side path on the south side. And the roundabout will be landscaped and lit.”

Utility relocation for the project is expected to start “any day,” he said.

He also noted that the county is also planning improvements for its portion of Lowell Road, but this is a few years out.
