Olympians can’t hold early lead, fall to Owls

Kyson Villarreal

Touchdown after touchdown, it was rinse and repeat for Seymour Friday night against Columbus East.

The Owls scored a touchdown on nearly every possession of the game, and the Olympians battled, but couldn’t keep up as they fell to 0-3 for the second time in three seasons with a 41-26 loss.

East had its best drive of the season when it marched 92 yards down the field, with Kyson Villarreal running it in from two yards out for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead after the extra point was blocked.

Seymour then went to its strength. Quarterback Bret Perry went on the aerial attack often. He went down the field in a hurry on the Owls opening possession that ended with a Logan Shelley 7-yard touchdown grab to make it 7-6 after the Jack Pennington extra point.

The Olympians drove down the field once again, but this time they went to the air. On third down at the 12-yard line, Villarreal scrambled to find Blake Borkhardt for the touchdown to go back in front 13-6.

Perry once again went to the air to march down the field on the ensuing possession. Jaylan Johnson caught a pass and went out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Cam Wheeler punched in on the next play with a touchdown run to put the Owls back in front 14-13.

On the ensuing possession, Villarreal’s pass was intercepted in East territory, giving Seymour great field position at the 30-yard line. The Owls took advantage when Perry found Wheeler for a 7-yard reception for a touchdown to make it 20-13 with 11:19 left in the second quarter.

East looked to scored when Keaton Lawson made a grab for a touchdown, but a penalty was called on the Olympians to negate the touchdown. East continued to drive down the field, but stalled at the 13-yard line with a turnover on downs.

The Olympians didn’t have an answer defensively again for the high-powered Seymour offense. The Owls marched down the field once again, and Perry threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Johnson to increase the lead to 28-13 at the half after the successful two-point conversion.

Seymour had the ball to start the second half, and just like its first four possessions, it ended with a touchdown. Perry found Wheeler with a pass to increase the lead to 35-13.

The Olympians got on the scoreboard again when Tyler Weller ran for a 20-yard touchdown to cut it to 35-20. The East defense came up big with a huge turnover on downs. It was the first possession of the game for Seymour that didn’t result in a touchdown.

It created a quick spark needed for the Olympians. Villarreal ran it for 21 yards to put East in a goal-to-go situation. After three plays, the Olympians were faced with fourth down. However, they turned it over on downs at the 5-yard line after Villarreal’s pass was incomplete.

The Owls put the game away on the ensuing possession. Perry found Kyle Hileman for a 68-yard pass to increase the lead to 41-20 after the extra point was blocked for a second time in the game.

East came back with another touchdown when Villarreal ran it in from 18 yards out for the score. However, the 2-point conversion attempt by the Olympians failed to leave the score 41-26 with 5:26 left in the game.

To chew up some clock, Seymour went to the running game. It was effective as they picked up a couple first downs to put away the game.
