Scottish Festival leaders seek more volunteers

Columbus Columbus Scottish Festival organizers are still trying to find more volunteers for the wide-ranging event Sept. 9-10 at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds. Leaders wrestled with the issue last year, too, all the while realizing that many area events and agencies are hurting for those willing to give of their time and talent.

“It seems to be a bad trend for many not-for-profit organizations,” said Mike Bostelman, festival president.

The challenge is especially significant because last year’s Scottish Festival attracted the best attendance in several years of about 3,000 people spread over a sunny weekend after awful weather for a few years straight.

The Scottish Festival includes Scottish and other food, Highland dancing and Highland sports competition, a car show, whiskey tasting, pipe bands, Celtic pop-rock groups, and more.

Organizers allow volunteers to attend the festival for free. It takes 56 volunteers per day “to make the festival fun and welcoming,” organizers posted on the Columbus Scottish Festival Facebook page.

A little help can go a long way, apparently.

“We desperately need festival lovers to volunteer a couple of hours to fill volunteer slots,” a recent Facebook post read. “So far, we have 33 signed up for Saturday and only 13 for Sunday!

“You don’t even have to be Scottish. The staff will show you everything you need to know, and they are only a radio call away if you have questions.
