Olympians fall to 2A No. 7 Pioneers

Boston Ely

Columbus East outshot Providence Saturday morning, but the Pioneers were a little more efficient with their shots.

Buoyed by a hat trick from Quentin Hesse, Class 2A No. 7 Providence scored on all four of its second-half shots, and that was enough to hand the Olympians a 4-1 defeat.

“We moved the ball really well,” East coach Josh Gonsior said. “They didn’t have many chances, but they managed to finish them. That’s probably the best forward that we’ve seen this season so far, and he took advantage of his opportunities.”

Following a scoreless first half, Hesse got the Pioneers on the board with a free kick in the 48th minute. Wyatt Moore added a goal three minutes later.

The Olympians (1-2-1) had a couple of chances over the next seven minutes, but put shots just over the crossbar. Hesse then scored goals in the 60th and 68th minutes to give Providence a 4-0 lead.

“It’s always difficult when you get that goal scored on you,” Gonsior said. “You can go one of two ways. You can respond to it, or you can react poorly to it, and I don’t think we reacted well to it. I just didn’t think we brought the intensity that we needed for that game.”

East got on the board in the 70th minute when Boston Ely scored off an assist from Ian Scholl.

The Olympians outshot the Pioneers 10-7, but Providence put six shots on goal to East’s four. August Comer recorded two saves for the Olympians.

“Credit to our guys for playing a better second half than a first half,” Gonsior said, :You can’t tell it by the scoreboard, but we didn’t give up there, and we managed to get one in, and that will help us going forward. We’ve scored in every game, and that’s a stark contrast to last year, so we’ll ride that wave.”
