Olympians take fourth, Panthers seventh in HHC tourney

EDINBURGH — The Columbus East girls golf team finished directly in the middle of the pack.

With the tough competition at the top, the Olympians shot a 367, which put them in fourth place in Monday’s Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at Timbergate.

Perennial powerhouse Floyd Central was once again the conference champion with a 300. Bedford North Lawrence was runner-up with a 327, followed by New Albany with a 354.

Jennings County finished seventh with a 459. Seymour was fifth with a 384, followed by Jeffersonville with a 435.

“I’m actually pretty pleased, even though we got fourth. It was our best score yet this year,” East coach LaDonna VanDeventer said. “I’m very pleased with that.”

Carter Gant led the Olympians with a 76 to finish fourth individually and make All-Conference. Floyd Central’s Paige Giovenco was the individual medalist by firing a 5-under 67.

Gant got off to a great start by firing a 35 on the front nine, but struggled on the back with a 41. Gant said her putting helped her with the score on the front nine.

“I was really happy with my round on the first nine. Then on the second nine, I ended up with a 41. I had some mental errors and just pushing through,” Gant said. “Overall, I was happy with it.”

For East, Grace LaSell shot a 93. Dyana Foster finished with a 97, Ali Trueblood had a 101 and Allison Sharpe carded a 114.

For Jennings, Lauren Galvan shot a 98. Shelby Davis finished with a 103, Amilia Gresham had a 122 and Aslynn Hopkins carded a 136.

The Olympians will square off in a dual match with crosstown rival Columbus North at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Otter Creek.
