Tracy Souza: See Exhibit Columbus to help our heritage and future

Lee Hamilton and his daughter, Tracy Souza, prepare to take a downtown driving tour of the 2023 Exhibit Columbus exhibition, “Public by Design.”

Fall is a time for community festivals across many communities. Kids have returned to school; sports are in full swing; a series of great holidays lies ahead — what’s not to like?

This fall Columbus residents once again can look forward to Exhibit Columbus with the presentation of “Public By Design.” People will gravitate to the inspiring, fun and quirky installations throughout the downtown. Everyone is welcome. There are no admission charges, and the only requirement is to simply enjoy the installations and the creativity behind them.

Digging deeper, Exhibit Columbus is a critical component of maintaining and promoting a fundamental aspect of our community’s heritage. Love it or not, architecture and design put Columbus, Indiana, on the map as a unique place to live and visit.

Attracting visitors and residents is a good thing and something almost every community in the country is trying to do. Our community is fortunate to have inherited a strong heritage and asset in its collection of modern architecture. It is up to us how well we take care of that gift.

The July 7, 2023, issue of the Indiana Business Journal highlighted Columbus’ “Preservation Predicament.” It rightly points out that with our great heritage comes great responsibility.

Landmark Columbus Foundation, sponsor of Exhibit Columbus, is a supporting organization of Heritage Fund and part of the community foundation’s work to create long-term value and community benefit.

Enjoy Exhibit Columbus and the sense of community that the installations foster, but remember that you also are celebrating the legacy and heritage of our community and helping to ensure they are passed along to future generations.
