A truck powered by a new Cummins natural gas engine that is being tested in Southern California has been shown to reduce nitrogen oxides and greenhouse gas emissions without compromising performance, the company said Thursday.

The Columbus-based company said the new engine, called the Cummins X15N natural gas engine, will potentially allow truck fleets to run on renewable natural gas and significantly reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing capability. The engine is expected to come to market next year.

The testing, which is expected to continue into 2024, is being conducted by Arizona-based freight transportation company Knight Transportation Inc. and uses ultra-low carbon renewable natural gas supplied by Clean Energy Fuels Corp.

Renewable natural gas is a sustainable fuel derived from organic waste, according to Clean Energy Fuels Corp.

“We value our collaboration with Cummins and are encouraged by what we have seen so far with the 15L renewable natural gas technology,” Dave Williams, senior vice president of equipment and government relations at Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. in a press release. “We will continue to work together to make sure that the capabilities and economics associated with this technology allow us to meet the wide- ranging needs of our fleet.”

Cummins Vice President North American On-Highway Business José Samperio said feedback from Knight Transportation in the development process “is invaluable to the products long-term success for our customers.”

“Our relationship with the Knight Transportation family goes back more than 30 years with a rich history of partnering through field tests of new technologies and features,” Samperio said in a press release. “The feedback in the development process is invaluable to the products’ long-term success for our customers.”
