Class 5A No. 1 Bloomington North shuts out Olympians

Columbus East got nothing going on offense for the second week in a row.

The Olympians were simply outmatched against the top team in Class 5A in Bloomington North. The Cougars dominated in every phase of the game to hand East a 42-0 loss in Friday night’s football contest.

This is the second time that the Olympians have been shut out this season. It’s also the worst loss for them since 1998.

East (2-5) received the opening kickoff, but couldn’t move the ball. On the punt, it was a low snap that was mishandled, and the punt only went five yards. With Bloomington North (7-0) in great field position at the 15-yard line, it only took four plays, was capped off by a Trey Scott 5-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 with 9:30 left in the first quarter.

After the Olympians were forced to punt again, the Cougars were in great field position once again. They drove the ball to the 30. Faced with a fourth-down, Bloomington North converted, but a penalty was called that negated the first down. The Cougars tried for the first down, but the East defense stopped them a yard short for the turnover on downs.

Later in the quarter, Bloomington North got the explosive play it needed when Scott ran the ball for 67 yards all the way down to the 7. Scott would finish off the two-play drive with a 7-yard run for the touchdown to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

After the Olympians were forced to punt again, the Cougars got another explosive play. With the defensive coverage breaking down, Jorian Brooks was wide open to make the grab for a 48-yard touchdown pass from Dash King to increase the lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter.

On the next Bloomington North possession, it drove down the field again, but this time the East defense forced a field goal. Noah Nelson kicked the ball through the uprights for a 31-yard field goal to increase the Cougar lead to 24-0 with 5:55 to play in the first half.

East tried to put points on the board late in the first half, but a 42-yard field goal attempt was no good. With 1:44 left, it gave Bloomington North the ball to try to add more points. They drove the ball deep, but with time winding down, the Cougars ran out onto the field for the 27-yard goal as time expired to make it 27-0 at the break.

Bloomington North scored on its first possession of the second half with a King 1-yard run, and they had a successful two-point conversion to trigger a running clock the rest of the game.
