FRANKLIN — Lauren Barker recorded a goal and an assist Saturday to help lead Franklin to a 6-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer win against Defiance.
Barker, a freshman from Columbus North, ranks second on the team with three goals and two assists and is tied for the team lead with eight points.
The Grizzlies (3-6-6, 2-2-2) will visit Rose-Hulman on Wednesday.
Collier catches pass in CMU victory
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Mitchel Collier caught one pass for five yards Saturday in Central Michigan’s 17-10 Mid-American Conference football win against Akron.

Collier, a redshirt sophomore tight end from Columbus North, now has four catches for 35 yards this season.
The Chippewas (4-3, 2-1) will play at Ball State on Saturday.
Newell helps Navy beat Army in Star Meet
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Matt Newell finished 10th Saturday to help the Navy men’s cross-country team to a 17-43 win at Army in the service academies’ annual Star Meet.

Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, ran 24:52.1 for 8K (5 miles). He was the Midshipmen’s No. 7 runner.

Newell’s sister, freshman Brianna Newell, finished 24th in the women’s race in 22:34.2 for 6K (3.8 miles). She was the No. 11 runner for Navy, which fell to Army 26-30.
The Midshipmen will compete in the Patriot League Championship on Oct. 2 in Hamilton, N.Y.
Russell helps Xavier to runner-up finish
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Will Russell finished 23rd on Friday to help the Xavier men’s cross-country team to a second-place finish in Bowling Green’s Falcon Invitational.

Xavier will compete in the Big East Championships Oct. 28 in Kenosha, Wisc.
Goecker helps Lipscomb to third-place finish
EVANSVILLE — A.J. Goecker finished 14th Friday to help lead the Lipscomb men’s cross-country team to a third-place finish in the Angel Mounds Invitational.
