Columbus Speedway Go-Karts to host final points race today

The Columbus Go-Kart Racing conducted events on Sept. 30 and Oct. 14. The final points race of the season will be held today. Races are held at the Tony Stewart Speedway on the grounds of the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The winners from Oct. 14 were Conner Smith (junior 2 and junior 3 divisions), Josiah Hunnicutt (rookie), Maverick Brison (junior 1), Troy Cowan (pred), Robby Young (medium), Sawyer Bohall (junior champ), Brandon Malone (super heavy) and Joe Boyll (mod lites).

The winners from Sept. 30 were Josiah Hunnicutt (rookie), Maverick Brison (junior 1), Brooklynn Summers (junior 2), Sawyer Bohall (junior champ), Jake Beck (lights), Robby Young (medium), Ronnie Sipes (pred), Travis Wilburn (senior heavy), R.T. Lowe (rwyb) and Chris Buchanan and Robby Young (team race).

Brownstown hosts season finale

The 28th Annual Funfest was the final event of the 2023 Brownstown Speedway racing season. The 410 Non-Wing Sprints (Oct. 13) and Super Late Models (Oct. 14) ran one night-only complete shows. All the other divisions ran events on both nights. Rain showers halted the Oct. 13 racing program before all the events finished. Some of that night’s events had to be ran on Oct. 14 with a revamped format. The weekend concluded with Sunday enduros.

On Oct. 13, Cody Trammell of Bloomington prevailed in the 410 Non-Wing Sprint car feature. Trammell was followed by Mario Clouser, Isaac Chapple, Brandon Mattox and Braxton Cummings.

The Oct. 14 Super Late Model event saw Jared Bailey of Bedford in Victory Lane. Bailey led Ryan Lanphierd, Brandon Thurlby, Skyller Lewis and Jeffrey Shackelford at the checkers.

Other feature winners during the weekend were Derek Groomer of Bloomington (crate late models and super stocks), Mickey Hines of Scipio (pure stocks), Brayden Watson of Bedford (modifieds), Michael Cranmer of Jeffersonville (crown vics), Brian Pollitt of Connersville (hornets), Dalton Roark of Dupont (bombers), Jacob Owens of North Vernon (hornet enduro),= and Alex Shipman of Bedford (pure stock enduro).

Cummins wins Tri-State finale

Kyle Cummins of Princeton concluded the 2023 racing season at the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt by winning the MSCS sprint car feature. Brady Short was second, followed by Chase Stockon, Carson Short and Jason McDougal. Brandon Coffey won the MMSA mini-sprint feature over Cody Knieriem, Eli Wilhelmus, Nolan Kiefer and Steve Justis.

This week in racing history

From 70 years ago in 1953 at Columbus Speedway, Albert Perry won the feature race over Ted Pfeiffer, Gene Minor and Gerald Hoppock.

From 60 years ago in 1963 at Brownstown Speedway, Gene Petro was named track champion. Chuck Terry was second in points, followed by Paul Crockett, Joe King, Bob Patton, Bearcat Chaplin, Johnny Baker, Mac Vails, Oscar Crockett and Sonny Lucas. Vails was named Rookie of the Year.

From 50 years ago in 1973, Bruce Gould driving in relief of Dave Dayton won the ARCA-sanctioned Salem 500 at Salem Speedway. Gould survived a complete spin on the final turn of the last lap to win the race over Bobby Watson, who finished second, four laps down to the leader. Jim Robinson was third, followed by Wayne Watercutter.
