East, Jennings girls square off in scrimmage

Jennings County controlled the first and fourth quarters, and Columbus East held its own in the middle two quarters of a girls basketball scrimmage Wednesday evening at East.

The Panthers’ Alivia Elmore, who missed all of last season after having ACL surgery, scored 13 of her game-high 23 points as Jennings outscored the Olympians 24-8 in the first quarter. The Panthers edged East 14-13 in the second quarter, and the Olympians outscored Jennings 10-8 in the third. The Panthers won the final varsity quarter 23-15 to give them a combined 69-46 spread.

Freshman Etta Young scored 15 points, while Maddie McIntosh had 10 and Alexis Carson added nine for Jennings. Returning Junior All-Star and Michigan State recruit Juliann Woodard was in a boot and did not play, but is expected back for Tuesday’s regular-season opener at Scottsburg.

Seniors Jenna Guse and Hauser transfer Madelyn Poe each scored 11 points to lead East. Messiah Trapp and Kenzi Cheek each added six.

The Olympians open the regular season Tuesday at home against Purdue Poly Englewood.
