College sports notebook: Kiesler, Barnett earn conference honors

BOISE, Idaho — Julia Kiesler was named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year after helping the Boise State women’s cross-country team to a runner-up finish in Friday’s MWC Championships.

Kiesler, a freshman from Columbus North, finished 16th in 20 minutes, 43.8 seconds for 6K (3.8 miles). She was the Broncos’ No. 4 runner.

Boise State will compete in the NCAA West Regional Nov. 10 in Sacramento, California.

Barnett helps Bisons to ASUN title

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mackenzie Barnett earned first-team All-ASUN Conference honors after leading the Lipscomb women’s cross-country team to the ASUN Championship.

Barnett finished seventh in 17:26.1 for 5K (3.1 miles). She was the Bisons’ No. 6 runner.

A.J. Goecker, a senior from Trinity Lutheran, finished 33rd in the men’s race in 25:32.3 for 8K (5 miles). He was Lipscomb’s No. 9 runner.

Lipscomb will compete in the NCAA South Regional Nov. 10 in Gainsville, Florida.

Russell helps Xavier to fourth in Big East

KENOSHA, Wis. — Will Russell finished 53rd to help the Xavier men’s cross-country team to a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s Big East Championships.

Russell, a freshman from Columbus North, ran the 8K (5 miles) in 27:26.99. He was the Musketeers’ No. 4 runner.

Xavier will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 10 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Mendez runs in Big East meet

TALLAHASSEE — Mateo Mendez finished 126th to help the Louisville men’s cross-country team to a 14th-place finish in Friday’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.

Mendez, a freshman from Columbus North, ran the 8K (5 miles) in 26:17.3. He was the Cardinals’ No. 7 runner.

Louisville will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional Nov. 10 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Sabotin shines in UINdy losses

Hannah Sabotin pounded 16 kills and led University of Indianapolis with seven blocks Saturday in a five-set Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball loss at Maryville (Missouri).

Sabotin, a senior Columbus resident and Trinity Lutheran graduate, had six kills and one block in Friday’s three-set loss at Missouri S&T.

The Greyhounds (15-9, 4-5) host Upper Iowa on Friday and Truman on Saturday.

Gilley makes first start at libero

TERRE HAUTE — Cadence Gilley made her first career start at libero and recorded 15 digs, four assists and one ace Saturday in Indiana State’s four-set Missouri Valley Conference volleyball win against Missouri State.

Gilley, a sophomore from Columbus East, notched six digs in Friday’s four-set loss to Southern Illinois.

The Sycamores (3-20, 1-12) play at Northern Iowa on Friday.

Hammons breaks off 27-yard run

DANVILLE, Ky. — Luke Hammons, a sophomore quarterback from Columbus North, carried one time for 27 yards Saturday in Centre College’s 54-22 Southern Athletic Association football win against Sewanee (Tennessee).

Huffman gets carries in Hanover defeat

TERRE HAUTE — Blake Huffman, a junior from Columbus North, carried twice for three yards Saturday in Hanover’s 44-39 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss at Rose-Hulman.
