Violation of protective order investigation leads to narcotics arrest

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested on a drug-related charge after an investigation into a violation of a protective order on Wednesday.

At 3:49 a.m., while on patrol, Deputy Dylan Prather saw and male and female in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn on North U.S. 31 and noted that the man, Phillip Cooper, 50, 132 S. Hughes St., Columbus, was violating a protective order by being in the presence of the woman.

Cooper was placed under arrest for being in violation of the protective order. Cooper later consented to the search of his hotel room which led to the discovery of approximately 133 grams of methamphetamine as well as other narcotics, said Sgt. Dane Duke, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Cooper was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on the charges of violation of a protective order, a Level 6 felony, dealing in methamphetamine, a Level 2 felony, possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony, possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony, possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor and maintaining a
common nuisance, a Level 6 felony. Cooper remains in custody on a 48-hour hold, jail officials said.
